There are many components that make up a lift truck. The forklifts key components comprise the truck frame, the engine components, the tilt cylinders, the overhead guard and the wheels. Additionally, a forklift consists of a variety of attachments. All the parts which make up a lift truck are of equal importance since they work together to make the operation of the equipment possible. The next paragraphs describe some of the lift truck components in detail.

The Overhead Guard - this guard forms the forklift truck's metal roof. It sits over the cab area and protects the machine operator while he or she is sitting and driving. The overhead guard ensures that nothing falling from above onto the truck will damage the controls inside the cab or injure the driver. The overhead guard is essential to the frame assembly on various models.

The Mast - Mounted either to the forklift frame or the front axle, the mast is the vertical lift truck component made of interlocking rails. The mast allows the forks to move upwards and down while providing lateral stability. The interlocking rails may either have bushings or bushings as guides. There are a couple of ways the mast may be operated: hydraulically by one or more hydraulic cylinders or chain operated with motive power provided by a hydraulic motor.

Forklift Carriage - The carriage is the component which the forks and other kinds of attachments are mounted to. The carriage is in fact directly attached to the hydraulic cylinder and is connected by chains. In order to enable the forks to be raised and lowered, the carriage may have either bushings or rollers to guide it in the interlocking mast rails.

Load Back Rest - a back rest is a metal rack which prevents a load from falling backwards while the carriage is lifted to its full height. The back rest is either bolted or welded on to the carriage.

Lift Truck Attachments - There are various types of attachments that could be fixed directly to the lift truck's carriage. Forks are the most common type of attachment. Moreover, there are L-shaped members, rotators, rollers, roll clamps, pole handlers and and all that. These different kinds of attachments are really handy for moving various types of loads.
